Grilled tofu is a delicious and healthy alternative to meat. This recipe provides a simple yet flavorful way to prepare tofu, perfect for a quick meal or as an addition to salads and bowls.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (14 ounce) block extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Wrap the block of tofu in a few layers of paper towels and place it on a plate. Place a heavy object (like a cookbook or cast iron skillet) on top of the tofu to press out excess water for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours.
  2. Cut the tofu: Once pressed, unwrap the tofu and cut it into 1/2-inch thick slices or 1-inch cubes.
  3. Prepare the marinade: In a shallow dish, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  4. Marinate the tofu: Add the tofu slices or cubes to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are coated. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes for more flavor.
  5. Preheat the grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grill grates to prevent sticking.
  6. Grill the tofu: Place the marinated tofu on the hot grill. Grill for 3-5 minutes per side, or until golden brown and grill marks appear.
  7. Serve: Remove the grilled tofu from the grill and serve hot. It’s excellent on its own, in sandwiches, salads, or stir-fries.

Notes

  • For extra crispy tofu, you can toss the marinated tofu with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch before grilling.
  • Adjust the red pepper flakes to your preferred spice level.
  • Leftover grilled tofu can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
